Stomp & Swerve – American Music Gets Hot Companion CD to the excellent book – Stomp & Swerve: American Music Gets Hot 1843-1924 written by David Wondrich. (Chicago Review Press) Illustrates how and when American popular music went from sentimental waltzes and parlor ballads to ragtime, jazz, and blues, with painful but essential and unblinking examinations of minstrel, whorehouse, and juke-joint numbers that make clear how and where American music got its edge. |
